Description
Continue your first grade work with the letters with this block about the vowels. The vowels and their sounds come alive through the story of Amahl and the Night Visitors. It’s a delightful story that perfectly brings the soul qualities of the vowel sounds in a sweet story about a poor shepherd family who meet the three kings.
Though the story of Amahl does tell the classic story of the Magi, it is a sweet story that can stand on its own, without the religious undertone. Throughout the block we balanced this story by celebrating holiday customs from other traditions. Though I was initially uncertain about using this traditional religious story with my diverse class, I’m so glad I did. It’s just perfect for bringing the vowels.
Out of respect for copyright, I do not include the story of Amahl and the Night Visitors, but it can be found inexpensively or for free at your local library.
Here’s what you’ll find in this guide.
- Day-to-day lesson plans, including stories, new material and suggestions for review activities
- An overview of the curriculum and how it takes shape in a daily lesson
- The fairy tales I used to introduce the few consonants I hadn’t finished up yet (the complete stories themselves)
- Photographs of student main lesson pages
- A guide to creating enlivening circle activities, with instructions for crafting your own circle exercises
- The specific content of the circle activities I used this block — including songs and poems
This guide also includes the circle activities and exercises that I used throughout this winter block, which is the typical season for this block in the northern hemisphere. Even if you work through this block at a different time of year, I’m sure you’ll find the poems, songs and activities appropriate to bring at some point. My students just loved them!
