Grade Four Fractions Curriculum Guide

Oh fractions! Truly, learning how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions is one of the most challenging skills your students will learn in 4th grade! But, I have to say, I was astonished by how easily my students picked up the skills we learned in this block!

This block focuses on the concepts of fractions, with fun explorations that help students realize how much they already know about fractions. It then dives deep into adding and subtracting, first with “friendly” fractions and before diving headlong into finding common denominators and changing improper fractions into mixed numbers.

It was a short, whirlwind of a block, but we learned so much and did lots of practice! Here are some of the concepts we covered in this block.

• how to draw fractions
• adding and subtracting fractions
• fraction terms (like numerator, denominator, improper fraction and mixed number)
• comparing fractions
• mixed numbers
• improper fractions
• adding with different denominators
• finding equivalent fractions

And so much more! Though we only had 12 short days to cover ALL of this content, we were fast and furious with our explorations and focused on lots of practice!

We were learning entirely online for this block, though I didn’t find that this format interfered with our typical main lesson rhythm. It was more challenging to teach some of the more complex concepts online, but that just means that I have REALLY thought through how to help my students understand the math concepts best.
