As much as I love my job — preparing curriculum, correcting papers, laughing with my students — these last few weeks of August are pretty precious.
After all, one of the things I love most about my job is the summer rhythm. Those luxurious days sleeping in and reading for pleasure are a blessing in a job with few perks.
So, as I count down the days, working in the classroom, buying supplies and sprucing up my teacher wardrobe, I always find myself looking for a little extra motivation.
Well, yesterday I found it.
When I arrived at school yesterday afternoon to put a few hours into my chaotic classroom, I found a few of my students sitting on the steps outside school. Their parents were in the building helping out, and they were taking some time to reconnect after an out-of-touch summer.
I can’t tell you how great it felt to see them! I stayed and chatted for a few minutes, we observed together how much they had grown and we shared a few summer stories. Then I went inside and got to work.
When I settled into the tasks on my to-do list, they suddenly seemed full of new meaning and purpose.
It’s so easy to get consumed by the curriculum, supplies and organizational tasks. It’s good to sometimes touch back in and remember the reasons why.
