Today we started a new block — a continuation of the stream of ancient history that we’ve been studying since the beginning of the year. In October we covered India and Persia, over the course of this month we’ll learn about Mesopotamia and Egypt.
It always happens this way. I’m tired at the end of a block. I think I’ll never be able to muster up enthusiasm behind a new subject, but somehow it always happens. Today as I told the students a story about Marduk and the dragon god Tiamat, described the lay of the land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and elaborated on the ancient Mesopotamian’s interest in order, I felt the old creative passion begin to stir.
By lunchtime I was so into it that I decided to do a painting with the students that earlier in the day I had been thinking about putting off. The result is the above ziggurat picture. The students did a beautiful job with it.
