One of the things on my long to-do list this break is to write block reports for the last two blocks. Beginning in 5th grade I’m beginning something that these students have not experienced before and that is an individual report for each block. I feel that starting somewhere between 5th and 6th grade students begin to want to know how they are doing.
This year my reports are in the format of a “main lesson book evaluation.” Inside the front cover of each book I tape one piece of paper. On one side of this sheet is a block summary that includes all of the material we covered during the block — artistic, imaginative and academic. On the other side is a table. On this table there is the following information:
- A table of contents of the main lesson book
- Space for my comments on each page
- A box indicating “completed.”
- A space for comments about class participation, writing, artistic work, homework and dictation.
- A space for student comments
- A space for parent comments
I am so pleased with this format. It really keeps my evaluation and comments within the context of the main lesson book, which seems less stressful for the children than an overall evaluation. Once I learn how to post .pdf’s I’ll post an example.
