Today I introduced the idea of repeating decimal fractions to my students and they were beside themselves with excitement.
Yes. Decimal fractions produced squeals of delight from my easily-amused crew.
Maybe I shouldn’t be so flattered that they think I’m great.
When I told them, with great pleasure in my voice, that they need never have a remainder again, I could feel their excitement begin to grow. When I showed them that after a decimal point you can add as many zeroes as you’d like, the room began to buzz and flutter with enthusiasm. When I finally presented them with a division problem that included a repeating decimal 3 they ran around the room comparing answers and laughing out loud. When we finally did the problem together and they realized the truth of what they had calculated, they squealed and begged for another problem!
I can just imagine the conversations they had around the dinner table this evening.
You can call me the decimal queen.
